WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY
TO SPEND A DAY
It was
with some trepidation that I decided to go on Bill Bekric’s
2nd Annual Bus trip as long bus trips and me don’t agree (I
get sick) however I took the plunge and am very glad I did.
We
were to meet at Fairfield at 10.30 (at Bill’s place) and loaded
all our gear onto the bus. We waited for a bit in case of late
stragglers but finally got on the way just after 11 am. The
singing had started before the bus did and continued all the
way to Sutherland where we made a stop at the Tradies to pick
up more people. It seemed to be a combination of Toongabbie
and Sutherland Folk Clubs with one or two extras (like me) thrown
in for good measure. After a couple of phone calls to see if
some others who had booked but weren’t there, were coming we
got under way.

More
singing, instument playing and laughter got us to Sublime Point
where we stopped for lunch. This consisted of rolls and hot
soup, three different varieties made by various folk, a pumpkin
one, Ham and vegetable and Potato & Leek? (Not sure as I didn’t
manage to get a taste of that one) Then on again to the Temple
where folk just wondered around or sat and meditated or whatever.
Myself, as I have been there several times with various folk,
just sat and thought out the words for my “party piece” that
I had been asked to do on the concert.
Onward
again to Wongawilli where Bill turned himself from a great bus
driver into a great cook and cooked sausages as if to the manner
born. The local club had provided salads etc. to which our contributions
were added and soon all were enjoying a hearty meal out of doors.
Don’t know where you got the sausages Bill but they were most
enjoyable (and I am not usually a sausage lover)
After
the meal we all moved inside and had concert made up of the
bus people and the local talent. It was good fun. Folk items
and some not so folk items all made for a wonderful evening.
All
too soon it was time to re embark on the bus and roll homewards.
Once again the Toongabbies led the singing and playing and we
all joined in. We even got Miguel Heartwole to sing his song
“The people have songs” and nearly lifted the bus roof off .

I
admire Bill tremendously, it must have been hard to concentrate
on driving while all that fun and jollity was going on behind
you and not be able to join in. I never heard about last year’s
trip until after it had happened, but if there is another trip
next year you can count me in. How about a trip to the Hunter
Valley club in the meantime?
